This is Industry Insider: a weekly 5-minute brief with key news, interviews, advice, smart picks & follows, built for artists and industry folks alike.
👆 ONE BIG THING
Oh hey this is Industry Insider and yet it’s Thursday which means this is out a day late.
Well there’s a very good reason for that, I’m trying to organize a home for our family, and as I’ve said before and will say again, it’s family first. Our very first value is Vita, life, the Love & Logic that flows towards the balanced existence of one’s own world. And so to do that, I need to make concessions from time to time.
Now, that said, this edition of Industry Insider was always going to be about Geraldine Carriere’s new book Wild to Wise: An Indigenous Woman’s Guide to Wild Grace, Soft Strength, & Your Sacred Self. which is officially out TODAY and which I have been working on with her as editor and publisher for over a year now. And there’s something appropriate about it coming out the day after Truth & Reconciliation day here in Canada, a day in the heart of harvest that forces us to face the apocalypse that was brought to Indigenous people and how much of it is STILL HAPPENING EVERY DAY despite the pearl clutching and hurt feelings of your least favourite relatives.
For one thing, it always felt kinda gross to be marketing a fuckin book on that same day. For another, it feels like the exact kind of healing process that Ger talks about and outlines in the book, of inner work and reflection. But at the same time, Ger is a total badass and is George Washing-done with your shit and will happily drop Tupac quotes and name an entire chapter “Cunt Life” (I’m not censoring that, grow up) because that’s who she is and if you don’t like it gtfo.
So that is all very awesome. And yes I could pontificate about how careful I had to be as a white man editing this Indigenous woman’s work and how sensitive I had to be to her culture, but nothing would convey the dynamic better than you seeing how often she was rolling her eyes around my hand wringing and histrionic headass white guilt. So let’s just slide past that and talk about Ger instead.
Ger is one of the most real badasses I’ve ever met. I just wrote that she’s fierce, and I worry that you will think I’m doing that thing where I’m saying a woman of colour is “fierce” because they just happen to have a personality that isn’t deferential. What I mean is she is truly the kind of person who takes up her namesake, and I don’t mean her English name, I mean her Cree name, which she explained to me roughly translates to “The Woman That Lives In The Mountains.”
And how appropriate that is. For someone who constantly reaches for greater and greater heights, and pushes herself to the absolute pinnacle of what she can achieve, it’s bloody appropriate. Don’t believe me? In the time since we started working with her in Jan 2025, she has:
Released a music video for “Light in Shadow” to mark five years of her debut EP
Released eight singles: “Wild Woman (L.O.N Remix),” “Can I Be Her,” “Are You My Type,” “Blessed in My Heels,” “Almost Lovers,” “Be Hotter,” “Touch Me,” and “Honeybees”
Released a whole EP, “Be Hotter,” and started on the next one
Taken “Can I Be Her” to #1 on the Saskatchewan radio countdown for seven straight weeks, then onto the Indigenous Music Countdown on SiriusXM
Made Exclaim!'s The Eh List three times
Made videos for “Can I Be Her” and “Are You My Type”
Finished her Executive MBA at Simon Fraser University
Torn her 2022 book Wild Woman down to the studs and rebuilt it as Wild to Wise, which is out today
Launched her own newsletter
So yeah, she knows a thing or two about a thing or two when it comes to being someone who dwells in the realms of great heights, whether creatively, professionally, personally, whatever.
As a musician who is also an author, she’s also part of our Vanguard of musicians, more of whom will be publishing their books with us in the coming months and years.
But today is hers. Wild to Wise is out right now, in paperback and ebook. Buy it, read it, then hand it to someone who needs it. And for the love of Ger, go and sign up for her newsletter.
Congratulations, Ger. You earned all of it.
Oh yeah, if you’re anything like me, you probably love a good ol’ book trailer as well, so here’s one I cut for her (I am her publisher after all):
Let's get into it.
