This is Industry Insider: a weekly 5-minute brief with key news, interviews, advice, smart picks & follows, built for artists and industry folks alike.

👆 ONE BIG THING

You didn't release your last song. You uploaded it.

Here's the thing: distribution is admin work. Sending a WAV to a distributor, posting the cover to your grid, and putting "OUT NOW" in your bio is paperwork. It is not a campaign.

A release has four jobs. All four, every time:

  • Feed the algorithms. Saves, adds, playlist follows, repeat listens. The signals that tell the machines to keep serving you to strangers.

  • Give fans something to talk about. Not "check out my new single." A reason, a story, a decision, a piece of the record they want to argue about.

  • Keep calling attention. One announcement is not a plan. Build eventful moments that pull attention back, week after week, long after release day.

  • Deepen the relationship. Content that makes people care about you, not just the track. That's what turns a stream into a ticket.

Let's be real: most release plans do one and a half of these, and the failure is always predictable:
Miss the algorithms and nobody new hears it.
Miss the conversation and it dies in your own group chat.
Miss the ongoing attention and you get one day of noise.
Miss the relationship and you build reach that never buys anything.

So audit your next release before you schedule it. Four questions, honestly answered:

  • What in this plan feeds the recommendation engines?

  • What gives fans something worth repeating?

  • What moments keep dragging attention back after week one?

  • What deepens the reason to care about the artist?

If you can't answer all four, you don't have a release. You have an upload date.

Stop planning launches. Start planning campaigns.

Let's get into it.
