This is Industry Insider: a weekly 5-minute brief with key news, interviews, advice, smart picks & follows, built for artists and industry folks alike.

👆 ONE BIG THING

Don’t make it weird.

Live performances mean you can still make mistakes. A crowd bonds to you more I would say in that moment that you make them laugh, not just when you nail the solo.

Darren Moore said this on the heartdea13r podcast, he said that getting a room laughing creates an intimacy that pure musical energy alone never reaches. It comes from the soul, and it turns a pile of strangers into your people.

Think about the last show that gutted you. Someone up there was human. They cracked a joke. They let the seam show. And you were theirs for the rest of the night.

I know I’ve seen that more times than not.

And honestly, it’s always so awkward when someone gets shitty about a flub.

So stop guarding your set like some kind of dress recital.

Say the unscripted thing.
Let the awkward beat land.
Talk to the room like a person.

Let us let out a breath. Don’t make it weird.

Tightness earns respect, sure. But laughter earns loyalty.

Let's get into it.

Speaking of laughing at yourself, we’ve had no shortage of that in trying to set this bad boy up. But today was the first time we actually managed to get one of these going(!) and I can’t thank the few people who watched it. We’re going to be doing these regularly going forward so come out to the next one!
