This is Industry Insider: a weekly 5-minute brief with key news, interviews, advice, smart picks & follows, built for artists and industry folks alike.

👆 ONE BIG THING

Stop pitching gatekeepers. They're not coming.

Brian Anthony Joyce of Major League told us on the heartdea13r podcast that most artists default to two approaches:

  1. They look left and right: friends and family who won't actually show up until you've already won.

  2. Or they look up: industry gatekeepers drowning in 10,000 other pitches.

Both lanes are crowded with people who don't care.

Here's the move nobody thinks about: look down.

Down at the strangers scrolling at 1 AM.
Down at the kid in another country who just found a band that sounds like yours.
Down at the corner of the internet where nobody is fighting for attention yet.

That's where fans come from.
Not the playlist curator.
Not your mom.
A stranger.

- Stop pitching the people who've already shown you they won't pay attention.
- Stop waiting for the people in your life to suddenly care.
- Start finding the strangers who could care, and giving them a reason to.

And because I'm a nice guy, I'll even tell you how:

Step 1: First, prep your profile. Make sure you have a pinned post that has the absolute best part of your best song. Make sure you have a bio that tells a stranger exactly what they're in for.

Step 2: Pick three artists one rung above you in your exact lane and live in their comment sections. Show up early. Say something specific enough that fans of that band screenshot it.

Step 3: Keep doing that.
