This is Industry Insider: a weekly 5-minute brief with key news, interviews, advice, smart picks & follows, built for artists and industry folks alike.

👆 ONE BIG THING

You'll never be happy.

Not at 10,000 streams. Not at 100,000. Not at the festival slot you've been chasing for three years.

The goalposts move the second you reach them. Then they move again. That's the trap.

Here's the thing: Ben Wright said it flat out on the heartdea13r podcast — one of the tragedies of the modern take on professional musicianship is that everybody thinks it's either American Idol or nothing, or rock star or nothing.

He'd know. Ben plays 150 shows a year. Runs a music-driven nonprofit. Toured the world. And he watched a former bandmate quit, join a wedding band, and end up making more money (and being happier) than him.

The point he’s making is this: you don't need to make a living at music to be a great musician.
You don't need to tour.
You don't need a deal.

You need to know what you actually want, and stop measuring yourself against a scoreboard built for ~10 people on the planet.

Because the milestone always moves, and the only people winning that game are the ones selling you the next one.

So here's the question you really need to ask yourself: what does success actually look like when nobody's keeping score?

  • Cadence — control over when you tour, who with, and when you stop?

  • Craft — work you're proud of, released on your timeline?

  • Trust — a small crowd that shows up every time?

  • Longevity — still doing this in twenty years without lighting your life on fire?

Pick one. Write it down. Pin it somewhere you can see it.

Stop chasing the version of success the industry hands you. It was built to keep you running, not to let you arrive.
