This is Industry Insider: a weekly 5-minute brief with key news, interviews, advice, smart picks & follows, built for artists and industry folks alike.
👆 ONE BIG THING
There's a version of your career that doesn't exist yet.
And you're not going to think your way into it.
Most musicians get stuck in the same loop: "I need to figure out who I am as an artist before I put anything out there."
So they wait. They tweak. They scrap the whole thing and start over.
And six months later, they still don't have an answer, just a hard drive full of drafts and a growing suspicion that everyone else has it figured out.
They don't. Nobody does. The artists who look like they have a locked-in identity? They didn't find it by sitting still.
They found it by moving and paying attention to what stuck.
That's the shift: stop treating your artistic identity like something to discover in private and start treating it like something that reveals itself through the work you actually ship.
Try a weird collab. Write a song in a genre you'd never admit to liking. Post the behind-the-scenes clip you almost deleted. Say something in a caption that isn't safe.
Why? Because exploration generates data that overthinking never will.
You're not looking for the perfect version of yourself. You're looking for the pattern, the thing that keeps showing up when you stop filtering everything through "is this on brand?"
This week: do one thing you're not sure about. Ship it. Watch what happens.
Let's get into it.
