👆 ONE BIG THING

Just because you’re getting views doesn’t mean you’re going to get results.

A couple years ago, I had a video of me making my infant son laugh hysterically with packing tape. It was 8 million or so on TikTok and 20-something million on Instagram.

I had the assumption that so many people have: that getting all this attention means success and results.

I had zero new sales, new leads, or revenue. None of it materialized.

Even when I did finally secure a placement on Good Morning America, it was just the use of the clip, which the hosts sort of reacted to, which was fun. Even when I did eventually, years later, get it licensed on a Japanese game show, it hadn’t really produced the thing that I actually thought was going to move the needle because it had nothing to do with what I actually do.

Imagine if you are an artist and one of your skit videos blows up, but you don’t like making those. After a while, on your social media profile, which was supposed to celebrate your work and your artistry, you get this question that comes down the line: “Oh, do you make music? I didn’t know that.”

Yikes! Shut it down. It’s time for a major pivot at that point.

As soon as you start to chase that, you start to lose sight of your values.

The content is the art, and it’s just an extension of it. Views and likes are nice and are a leading indicator, but they are not something you can bank on. Streams do not guarantee ticket sales. Followers do not guarantee likes, views, comments, shares, saves, and all that fun stuff.

The real question is: when I have a proper ask, how many people will actually do it when I ask them on a specific given channel?

At the end of the day, you’re trying to sustain a career, and you can’t do that with just a bit of attention, some streams, and some views.

What does provide revenue? Selling things, bringing people to places, and having them exchange more money for the thing you are offering them.

That’s a career.

Let’s get into it.
